Antigua Guatemala (2020)

I went on an International Educational Exchange program through KUMCIO. One of our stops was Antigua, Guatemala. This clock tower arch is a landmark in the city. I was in the right place at the right time to capture these pigeons in an iconic setting. The times were uncertain with the looming COVID Pandemic. We were actually uncertain if we would be allowed to leave the country and return to the US. Luckily, we were one of the last flights from Guatemala for a while and when we landed back in the USA the whole team was quarantined for 2 weeks. The image brought a feeling of hope and serenity.

Kansas Roads (2022)

Wide open country. Big sky and incredible views of seemingly endless ribbons of highway. What a great pleasure it was for me to travel Kansas as part of my position as the Associate Dean for Rural Health Education.

Four Corners – Shiprock (May 2023)

A long drive into the wilds of Northeast New Mexico. Then rising from the desert floor was this amazing volcanic remnant…Ship Rock. Long revered by tribal nations of the region as a sacred place, we felt the presence of spirit. A privilege to see and photograph. I hope I captured the persona of this wonderous place.

Four Corners – Monument Valley (May 2023)

Northern Arizona and Southern Utah contain some of the most awesome geographical features. Iconic views inspire deep interspection.

Philmont – Kennedy is actually named “Prairie Schooner” (2013)

I was driving back from Philmont New Mexico after serving as one of the attending faculty at the Philmont infirmary with the KUMC medical students. I was traveling on the “blue highways”, and I was being followed by this large thunderhead as it traveled across the prairie like a large ship crossing the ocean.  I was going down US Hwy 40 and I turned onto this dirt road and watched the storm. I was using the polarized lens filter to accentuate the contrast between the thunderhead and the cobalt sky. I had taken many pictures and just sat and watched. As I took one of the photos it occurred to me that I thought I saw a lightning flash. Indeed, I accidentally captured a lightning bolt coming from the bottom of the thunderhead. What a GIFT!

Sunset at Panajachel (March 2013)

In Panajachel, Guatemala on the shore of “Lago de Atitlan” which is a deep volcanic lake. My wife and I were enjoying the sunset and the magic played out before us. There are three different volcanic peaks along the lake and there was the fiery sky to highlight them.
